Art Beginings

The contemporary fine arts of the Slovaks living in Vojvodina represent one of the richest and the, most valuable segments of Slovak culture. Today the number of academically educated artists has reached thirty.

The Slovak arts collection of contemporary fine arts in Vojvodina originated on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the Slovak grammar school's foundation in Backi Petrovac. For that occasion, a gallery was founded and opened in the school's building in which the art collection was exhibited on
October 15, 1989. The first display consisted of presents  13 Slovak artists. The collection included paintings, graphics, drawings and sculptures. After that, in 1994, the gallery has been enriched by a further number of art works by seven artists. That art exhibition, opened on the occasion of the 75th anniversary since the grammar school's foundation, presents works of oil paintings, watercolours, pastels, drawings and graphics as welI as sculptures made of glass, cast iron, terra-cotta, all in all by 20 artists. The majority of these artists were former students or teachers of the grammar school.
Along with the marking of the 75th anniversary since the foundation of the grammar school, the gallery was named Karol Miloslav Lehotsky (18791- 1929) .
Lehotsky was the first Slovak academic painter from a stream of Slovak painters from the
Province of Vojvodina. He studied fine arts In Prague and Vienna and most certainly earned himself a significant place In the history of Slovak fine arts.
The Slovak arts collection of contemporary fine arts in Serbia and Montenegro in the Karol Miloslav Lehotsky gallery has been enriched by further art works on October, 2004 on the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the grammar school.
The Slovak arts collection of contemporary fine arts today has 43 art works created by 25 artists (Jan Agarsky, Miško Bolf, Mira Brtkova, Ingrid Cickova, Pavel Čani, Viera Fajndovićova-Sudiova, Maria Gaškova, Michal Kiral', Martin Kizur, J. Klatik, Ivan Križan, Vladimir Labat-Rovnev, S. Lačok, Anna Mal'achova- Fajndovičova, Daniela Markova, M. Pavelka, K. Pavelkova-Vukajlovicova, A. Pixiadesova, Pavel Pop, M. Sudi, J. Supek, D. The Karol Miloslav Lehotsky art gallery with its permanet fine arts collection serves as a instructional-educational exhibition for all the school's students in regard to the various art techniques. However, far more important is the fact that the  gallery is the only permanent exhibition of the rich Slovak creative work of modern arts in Vojvodina.
